A 35 year old man is in trouble after he was arrested for trying to smuggle a vehicle from South Africa through the Plumtree border post. Farai Manja Katiyo was denying the charge when he appeared before a Bulawayo magistrate Lungile Ncube. On the September 11 2014 Katiyo entered Zimbabwe driving a Toyota Hiace omnibus with Botswana Registration number plates through Plumtree Border post. His temporary import permit had expired and he was supposed to extend or remove the vehicle from Zimbabwe.
Police Minerals and Border Controls unit were tipped and conducted investigations leading to the recovery of the car and arrest of Katiyo.
They discovered that it was fitted with local number plates.
Asked to produce declaration particulars, he failed and instead produced expired temporary import permit and the Botswana registration book.Zimbabwe Revenue Authority impounded the car.The smuggled vehicle is valued at us$12000 with a potential duty of US$4 800.
